Dr. Amjad Hammad honored as a distinguished Jordanian medical professional; Speaks about giving back to his home country

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – The president of the Capital Region and Adirondack’s largest ophthalmology group, EyesNY, has been selected by the Jordanian King to represent a newly-developed, national healthcare advisory board. Dr. Amjad Hammad is one of just a handful of distinguished Jordanian medical professionals who will help use his prowess and expertise to replicate a successful model of healthcare that can be instituted throughout the Middle East.

Earlier this month, Dr. Hammad was invited to meet with His Majesty King Abdullah II at the United Nations in New York City where he, among 15 other Jordanian medical professionals, were honored for their medical and academic achievements in the United States, their ongoing support with Jordanian medical students and the country’s healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Hammad is on the executive board of the Jordanian American Physicians, a registered not for profit organization, that helped during the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting webinars for doctors and fundraising to purchase ventilators for patients in Jordan, Dr. Hammad hosts and trains students at EyesNY to help them acquire hands-on experience and skills to bring back to their home country.

EyesNY has hosted a total of six students with a student currently training at one of their offices.

Dr. Hammad came to the United States for specialized ophthalmology training and planned to return to Jordan, but while completing his residency at Albany Medical College in 1997, he met his wife, an Albany Law School student, and decided to call the Capital Region his second home.

“Jordan is a special place; it will always be near to my heart. It is where I grew up and where my family is,” said Dr. Hammad. “Jordan never closes its doors to refugees. It is a third world country with little resources, yet it still finds ways to support millions of people from other countries by providing healthcare, education, clean food and water, and jobs; that is not easy. It is time for me to pay back the country, people and community that gave me so much and helped me get to where I am today.”

As part of the advisory board, Dr. Hammad and the team of medical professionals will be responsible for strategizing, researching and testing some of the best public and private sector models of healthcare here in the United States and will be assessing how to integrate, imitate and execute the most successful healthcare models in Jordan, keeping barriers in mind like topography, limited resources and access to care. A second meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah II and the advisory board is planned for this Fall 2022.

“This is all about a bigger plan that is more than a single doctor helping its patients,” said Dr. Hammad. “We need to bring more value to the people of Jordan.”
