SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – SUNY Schenectady County Community College’s Office of Workforce Development and Community Education responds to career advancement and industry training needs in the Capital Region by securing funding to offer a variety of programs to local area businesses.
Recently, the College announced during an event hosted by the Center for Economic Growth and Key Bank, that SUNY SCCC will partner with Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC), the Center for Economic Growth (CEG), Capital Region BOCES and the Business Council to address training gaps in the manufacturing sector. SUNY SCCC will be offering a middle skills training program utilizing funds from a $108,450 CEG grant. The funding supports program expenses including tuition assistance, instructor salaries, and instructor certifications. Capital Region BOCES will be providing classroom space for the training, and the Business Council will serve as a connector between CEG, SUNY SCCC, HVCC, Capital Region BOCES and Capital Region manufacturing industry partners.
Also, SUNY SCCC will partner with three local companies to offer employee on-the-job education and training programs tailored to the specific needs of each company. The training programs will be funded through an $82,500 grant that the College received from the SUNY Community College Workforce Development Training Grant Program for 2017 – 2018.
Through the grant:
- ShopRite Supermarkets will receive leadership and management training along with culinary training skills taught by SUNY SCCC faculty.
- Employees from Inova, a manufacturer of multi-functional furniture solutions, will receive high-skilled manufacturing training that will streamline assembly-line efficiency, help to reduce turnover in jobs, and boost shop productivity.
- Precision Valve and Automation (PVA) training will increase computing skills that support various aspects of PVA finance, accounting, production, and business and operations management. PVA is a manufacturer of automated dispensing and coating robots.
The training programs are scheduled to be completed this summer. Training will take place at employer locations and on the SUNY SCCC campus.
